Rafael Nadal v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head

It’s such a one-sided rivalry that it’s difficult to see how Dimitrov will manage to turn things around against Nadal. In the 14 meetings they have had in the past, Nadal has beaten Dimitrov 13 times including five times on clay. The Bulgarian’s only win came in the quarterfinal of the China Open in 2016.

Nadal Wastes No Time on Delbonis

The world number three Nadal was returning to the sport after bit of a layoff from tennis, having last played at the Australian Open. And while he was playing on clay, his injury issues made it bit of a suspect that he would come through easily in his opener.

But then Nadal isn’t Nadal for no reason, especially not on clay and he registered a crushing win over his Argentine opponent to make it to the third round.

The Spaniard needed an hour and 22 minutes to come through, breaking Federico Delbonis five times in the entire match. While he lost his serve once, that came late in the second set by which time he had already made enough inroads into the encounter.

It’s still early days into Nadal’s comeback and given the very little tennis he has played since the pandemic broke out last year, there will still be some question-marks as the opponent strength rises and in matches that aren’t best-of-five sets. Against Dimitrov, that might not be that much of a bother though.

Dimitrov Gets Past Chardy

Having already registered a straight-set win in the first round against Jan-Lennard Struff, Dimitrov came through his second round match against Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (3), 6-4 to seal his place in the third.

The 2018 semifinalist in this competition, Dimitrov needed an hour and 43 minutes and two sets to get past Chardy in what turned out to be a cagey affair.

Dimitrov had a chance to serve out the first set at 5-3 but Chardy broke the Bulgarian to push the set into a tie-breaker. He managed to pouch it, before breaking Chardy yet again in the fifth game of the second set.

This time around, there were no nerves as Dimitrov served out the match and completed the victory.

Nadal v Dimitrov Prediction and Tip

For the second match in a row, Nadal is an overwhelming favourite again, offers of 1/20 to win this and 1/5 in straight sets. Given the manner in which Nadal went in the previous round it’s tough to see him drop a set here.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 1/5 (bet365)
