Nikoloz Basilashvili v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

On the ATP circuit, there have been two previous matches between Basilashvili and Chardy and the head to head reads 1-1. Both matches were played on clay including one at the 2018 Istanbul Open and 2019 Hamburg Open.

They had also once played on the hard court surface of the 2017 Irving Challenger where Chardy won the match.

Basilashvili in a Season of Extremes

It’s been either this or that for Basilashvili in 2021. After a shoddy season last year in which Basilashvili won just three of the 17 matches he played all year, he looked to have begun on a positive note with back to back victories at the Antalya Open.

That, however, was followed by a run of results that transported the fans back to 2020 when Basilashvili couldn’t buy a win.

Five back to back defeats followed and it wasn’t until the ATP Doha that he finally managed to a match again. But that’s not all that he did. He went on to win that title!

Yep, five successive losses followed by five successive wins. Two first round losses followed next, a semifinal at the Cagliari Open in his first tournament on clay before he retired from his opener at the Monte-Carlo Masters after being down a set and a break.

With all that happening, it’s tough to predict which form of Basilashvili will come out to do battle in this opener!

Chardy, a Form Player for the Season

While Chardy himself isn’t too much of a clay court player, his form this season makes him take to court in Barcelona as a super confident one.

Last week he made it to the second round at the Monte-Carlo Masters, a competition in which he has featured in since 2009 and never made it past the second round.

It is his showing before the clay court season that gives him the confidence to get past someone like Basilashvili at least.

Other than three opening round defeats – at the Australian Open, ATP Doha and the Miami Masters – Chardy has made it to two semifinals and two quarterfinals already this season.

Wins over Fabio Fognini, Marin Cilic, Taylor Fritz, Ugo Humbert, David Goffin, Alex De Minaur and Karen Khachanov boost that confidence and he should start off as one to watch here.

Basilashvili v Chardy Prediction and Tip

It’s Basilashvili’s inconsistency versus Chardy’s form and while the former is a better player on clay than the Frenchman, the latter’s consistent form makes him a solid favourite.

Tip: Chardy to win: 1/2 (bet365)
