Belinda Bencic v Nastasja Schunk Head to Head
There have been no previous matches played between Bencic and the 972nd-ranked Schunk before this encounter.

Bencic an Early Casualty in Charleston
Other than making the final at the Adelaide International earlier this season, Bencic hasn’t really set the courts on fire for the kind of world ranking she enjoys. The world number 12 has won and lost seven matches this season, her poorest record since 2016 and she now moves into the clay swing with a poor start under her belt.
At the Charleston Open, a WTA 500 competition, Bencic had a first round bye but then fell to a three-set defeat at the hands of Paula Badosa in the second round to crash out of the tournament despite going into that encounter as a favourite.
Bencic did have a solid season on clay in 2019 when she reached the semifinal in Madrid and the quarterfinal at the Charleston Open but in the only match she played last year, the Swiss player had lost to Danka Kovinic. That came in Rome and she then skipped the French Open because of fitness issues.
What Bencic needs is the kind of start here that fills her with confidence for the rest of the tournament given she is playing a teenager who has never been ranked inside the top 900.

Schunk on WTA Debut
With wins over Daniela Seguel and Noma Noha Akugue in the qualifying rounds, Schunk has made it to the main draw of this competition, making it her WTA main draw debut.
Because before this, the German had played most of her tennis on the ITF circuit and is yet to win a title even that level.
In fact, this year, Schunk needed to even qualify for an ITF event in Antalya, also held on clay, and she went on to make it to the second round there.
Last season, she was 7-3 in main draws of clay court competitions on the ITF tour, reaching back to back semifinals in Netherlands and Slovenia.
Unfortunately for Schunk, an opening round match against a seeded player isn’t what she would have been hoping for but in a way that gives her a chance to push for a surprise opening given her opponent’s form hasn’t been up to the scratch anyway.
Bencic v Schunk Prediction and Tip
A straight-set win for Bencic would be a par for the course but can Schunk send a few ripples here thanks to the unknown-factor? The games market looks tempting here.
Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 5/6 (bet365)
