Kontaveit with a Middling Season So Far
Kontaveit has had the kind of season so far where she has promised a lot but has fallen short of delivering the big results. The end result is a 10-5 win-loss record in 2021, which includes semifinal appearance at the Grampians Trophy and three back to back results which saw her win two rounds before losing in the third.
More recently, Kontaveit got a first round bye in Miami, needed three sets to scrape past Sorana Cirstea in the second before falling to Elise Mertens in the third.
On clay, Kontaveit has a decent record with a final appearance at the Palermo Open last year immediately after the pandemic break after having done the same at this very tournament in 2019. Can the 2019 Stuttgart Open runner-up start off with a solid showing.

Middendorf Making Main Debut
Middendorf is just 18 years of age and more known for her showing at the junior level where she broke into the top 40 at one point. This will be the first time she will be playing on the WTA circuit main draw with wins over Jana Fett and Tamara Korpatsch in the qualifiers taking her through.
Both her wins in the qualifiers, which incidentally were the second and third victories for the German this season across all circuits, came from being a set down – the German fighting back in fine style to clinch the main draw berth.
Last year, Middendorf played only in local, German-based exhibition tournaments, having lost in the only four matches she played in on the ITF circuit.
Can she now go one step further on her main draw debut?
