For a player who was ranked number one not so long ago and is still a top 10 player according to the tweaked WTA rankings, Pliskova’s record early this season has been anything but exemplary. Of the 13 matches Pliskova has played, she has won only seven and lost six of them.
A third round appearance at the Australian Open was her best showing but in none of the other five competitions has Pliskova won more than one round.
Interestingly enough, three of those six defeats that Pliskova has endured, have come against one player – Jessica Pegula, who ousted her in the quarterfinal at the WTA Doha, third round in Dubai and the third round at the Miami Open. It was only in that latest competition in Miami that Pliskova even managed to win a set.
While Pliskova isn’t quite your typical clay-court player and nor does she enjoy playing a lot on dirt, Pliskova does have three titles on this surface. A finals appearance at the Italian Open last season and a title win at that very competition in 2019 is also an indictor of how the Czech can make things work out on dirt.
Question is if she can go really deep in this to give herself some confidence in the lead-up to Roland-Garros.

Korpatsch Really ‘Lucky’ to Be There
Not only did Korpatsch lose in the second qualifying round of this competition, her record this season has been quite dismal.
Featuring in three ITF-level tournaments before the WTA Stuttgart, Korpatsch has lost all of them in the first round, with the German not even winning a set. Despite that she went into her opening qualifier in this tournament as a favourite and still had to overturn a first set deficit to win it only to fall to Julia Middendorf.
It wasn’t too different last year either.
Korpatsch featured in three ITF tournaments in the first part of the season, and lost all of them and went down in the first qualifying round at the WTA Lyon as well. Post the pandemic-break, Korpatsch then made it as far as the third qualifying round of the WTA Prague but then lost that match and at the first round of the French Open and US Open too.
With a record as poor as that over the past 15 months, Korpatsch is really lucky to get herself a lucky loser spot in the main draw here. Can she turn the corner?
Pliskova v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip
It’s Pliskova all the way despite her underwhelming form. The Czech has lost matches, sure, but those have been to in-form peers, but expect her to romp to a straight-set win over a player who has never made the top 100 earlier.
