Schwartzman Hoping to Reverse Monte-Carlo Loss
A clay-court specialist, Schwartzman did not make a very good start to this European clay swing as he crashed out in the Monte-Carlo Masters opener last week. Drawn to play a tricky opponent admittedly, the Argentine had gone down to Casper Ruud without too much of a fight, losing to 6-3, 6-3.
It was a shock loss for a player who had only late last season sent Rafael Nadal packing on clay and won three of his four ATP titles on dirt.
Which is why when he kick-starts his campaign here at the Barcelona Open, a steady showing will be the only thing on his mind, one that leads him deep into this tournament. His draw isn’t the toughest given that he doesn’t play any of Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas or Andrey Rublev till he reaches the last four but the Argentine could face a few tricky opponents on the way.
Frances Tiafoe is one of them as Schwartzman looks to get past a player who stunned Carlos Alcaraz in his own opener. Schwartzman had a first round bye.

Tiafoe Showing Signs of Sparkle
It’s been a solid season for the American Tiafoe as he gnaws away at the early rounds of competitions. It looks like a matter of time before he makes it another tournament win, having last done that in 2018 at the Delray Beach.
Tiafoe came through to the second round with a straight set victory over Carlos Alcaraz, a teenage sensation who had gone into that Barcelona Open opener as 1/2 favourite. Instead, it was Tiafoe who won 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Needing an hour and 44 minutes, Tiafoe broke Alcaraz twice in the first set, but more importantly held on to his own serve till the seventh game without facing a break-point. Even when he did get eventually broken in the eighth game, Tiafoe had a break of serve up his sleeve and came through by serving out the set in the 10th game – winning it off his fourth set-point.
In the second set, Alcaraz broke first but Tiafoe levelled it off in the seventh game and missed another break-point in the ninth to push the set into a tie-breaker. The tie-breaker turned out to be a one-way traffic as the American reeled off six points in a row to complete an easy victory.
Can he now trouble Schwartzman in round two?
Schwartzman v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip
Schwartzman is an overwhelming favourite but there have been a few chinks in his armour recently which should bring Tiafoe into this contest. A games handicap of +4.5 looks par for the course.
Tip: Games Handicap Tiafoe +4.5: 8/11 (bet365)
