Diego Schwartzman v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head
The players have met twice and the head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Both meetings were on hard court in 2017, and both went to final sets.

The shorter 2020 season was an impressive one for Diego Schwartzman who reached a career ranking of number nine in the world and made his first ever ATP Tour Finals. During the year, the Argentine was a finalist at the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome where he defeated Rafael Nadal for the first time in his career, and also a semi-finalist at the French Open, defeating one of the title favorites Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals. He was also a quarter-finalist at the Paris Masters 1000 and a finalist at the Cologne Open.
2021 did not keep up the tempo from 2020 for the Argentine. He split a 1-1 record at the ATP Cup losing to Daniil Medvedev convincingly, but defeating Kei Nishikori in a three set tussle. He looked in good touch making the round of 32 at the Aussie Open, but was blown off in straight sets by the surprise package of the tournament Aslan Karatsev.
Schwartzman returned to his favorite surface, i.e. clay looking to put up a good run of form and rekindle the form from last season. He was in for a surprise loss at the Cordoba Open, but clinched the title at Buenos Aires thereafter.
The Argentine participated in the Mexican Open at Acupulco and at the Miami Masters 1000, but lost to Next Gen talent in both, i.e. Lorenzo Musetti and Sebastian Korda respectively. With the clay season now well and truly underway, Schwartzman was hoping to start on a strong footing at Monte Carlo last week, but lost early to rising clay courter Next Gen Casper Ruud in straight sets.
In his opener here in Barcelona, Schwartzman looked all but out against Frances Tiafoe, with the American serving for a straight sets win, but the Argentine came back to win in three sets. He looked in good touch against Corentin Moutet in the last round, but will be well aware he needs to up his level considerably here on as he faces the top players on the tour on clay here on.

Carreno Busta Hoping To Solidify Clay Run
Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta has been in good form in recent times, most recently a solid 2020 season where he had a 20-12 record, which included a run to the semifinal of the U.S. Open for the second time in his career.
After a decent ATP Cup, where he had a good 2-1 record for Spain, it was an unfortunate end to his Australian Open, pulling out in his third round encounter against Grigor Dimitrov with injury and missing most of the rest of the hard court season.
A return in Dubai saw him eliminated early against the in-form Marton Fucosvics, but he has done well since the start of the clay season last week. Being top-seeded at the Andalucia Open earlier this month, he prevailed with a title run. Moving on to Monte Carlo, he was hoping for a better run but just like Schwartzman was also eliminated by Casper Ruud.
Carreno Busta has looked in good touch this week with striking straight set wins, but is yet to play anyone of note on clay and will know that he has his work cut out against an opponent like Schwartzman here on the Barcelona dirt.
Schwartzman v Carreno Busta Prediction and Tip
This has all the makings of a fight of grit, tenacity and an exchange of phenomenal groundstrokes. While Schwartzman is the better clay courter, his form has looked shaky this year and this week. The Spaniard has been more consistent of late and the Andalusia Open title has given him the much needed confidence.
Expect Carreno Busta to prevail in two hard-fought sets.
