Sloane Stephens v Caty McNally Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 28-year-old Stephens and 19-year-old McNally.

2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens will begin her Parma Open campaign on Monday. The 28-year-old, ranked 65th in the world, comes to the tournament with a 5-8 record in the main draws this year.

A six-time WTA winner, Stephens has been off colour since 2019. This year, the American’s struggles continued as she made four first-round exits to begin the season, before finally winning her first match of the year in Miami, defeating France’s Oceane Dodin.

Stephens lost to compatriot Amanda Anisimova in the next round in Miami, but got some form going in Charleston the next week, reaching the quarterfinals with wins over Wang Xinyu, Madison Keys and Ajla Tomljanovic. She was eventually defeated by Veronika Kudermetova in the round of eight.

Beginning the clay season in Madrid, the American ousted Danka Kovinic in the first round but lost to Ons Jabeur despite taking the first set.

Stephens had to qualify for the Italian Open last week before making a first round exit to familiar foe Madison Keys. The former World no. 3 had once again squandered a one-set-to-love lead as Keys scored a come-from-behind victory.

A solid clay court player, Stephens, who has a 59% win record on the surface, reached the final of the French Open in 2018. She will be aiming to recapture her lost form by starting well in Parma.

McNally Qualifies for the Main Draw

Facing Stephens in the first round will be another American Caty McNally, who entered the main draw after defeating Ukraine’s Katarina Zavatska 6-3, 6-4 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

McNally had begun the qualifiers with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Italy’s Jessica Pieri on Saturday.

The 19-year-old American, ranked 109th in the world, is 7-8 overall in singles this year.

Her best performance this year came in Guadalajara where she reached the quarterfinal before falling to Eugenie Bouchard. She also reached the Round of 16 in Charleston before going down to Paula Badosa in straight sets.

McNally, who has three doubles titles, is yet to make an impact in singles and will be looking to make full use of her potential to climb the rankings in the singles game.
