Tennys Sandgren v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the first round of the Australian Open in 2018, Sandgren winning in straight sets.

Sandgren Out of Form on European Clay

Although primarily known for his achievement in hard court tournaments, especially the Australian Open, where he has twice been a quarter-finalist, Sandgren is not a complete novice on clay.

In 2018 he finished runner-up in the US Clay Court Championships in Atlanta to Steve Johnson, and won two tournaments on the surface in his days playing on the junior tours.

Nevertheless, he has a terrible record at the French Open, where he has only ever won one match.

There is little evidence that he is in the sort of form to improve on that next week.

Since switching to Europe and clay, he failed to qualify for Barcelona, Madrid and Rome and was beaten in the first round in Munich.

He did at least improve slightly by winning his first match in Geneva last week, beating the Italian Salvatore Caruso, but Casper Ruud ended his run with a comfortable straight sets win.

Chardy Better Known as a Doubles Player

Chardy’s solitary senior ATP title came on clay, but that was back in 2009, when he won the Stuttgart Open.

However, he has enjoyed more recent success in doubles events, winning seven tournaments in all, and forming a successful partnership in recent years with compatriot Fabrice Martin.

In 2019, they were the beaten finalists at the French Open.

His singles record in his home Grand Slam is disappointing though – in 14 previous attempts he has only made the fourth round twice, and, in the past two years, has not got beyond the first round.

His recent form on clay suggests he will do well, to improve on that record next week,  although he did beat Alexander Bublik in the first round in Monte Carlo, before losing to Grigor Dimitrov.

He also made the second round in Barcelona ad Estoril, but has not played since his first round defeat in Madrid at the hands of Dan Evans, not known for his exploits in clay.

Sandgren v Chardy Prediction and Tip

Both men come into this match looking to find some form ahead of the French Open. Sandgren won their previous match, but that was in the Australian Open, where he has a fine record. Clay is another matter altogether, and Chardy may just have the edge because of his doubles’ history on the surface.
