Opelka Advances With Ease
No. 32 seed Reilly Opelka didn’t have much trouble in defeating Slovakia’s Andrej Martin in the first round of the French Open on Monday.
The 23-year-old American, who is playing his best tennis on clay this year, won at Roland Garros for the first-time ever as he outplayed Martin 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Opelka was knocked out in the first rounds in his first two appearances in 2019 and 2020.
The 6’11” Opelka struck 10 aces, hit 36 winners and broke his opponent seven times in the match. He had, however, 42 unforced errors in the match compared to Martin’s 26.
The American had come to Paris with a 6-9 record this year, with his best performance surprisingly coming on clay, his less-favoured surface, as he reached the semifinals of the Rome Masters.
Opelka, who was 2-6 on the hard courts this year, defeated Richard Gasquet, Lorenzo Musetti, Aslan Karatsev and Federico Delbonis, all inn straight sets, to reach his first-ever Masters semifinal in Roma, but was stopped from reaching the final by Rafael Nadal.

Munar Battles Past Thompson
Facing Opelka in the next round will be World No. 72 Jaume Munar, who fought back after dropping the first set to outlast Australia’s Jordan Thompson in a sapping four hour and 23 minute contest.
The 24-year-old Spaniard struck 35 winners and made 28 fewer unforced errors than his opponent’s 78 to win the contest 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Munar had 23 break points in the match, but he could convert just five of them. He also saved eight break points, while getting broken on two occasions.
This was Munar’s second win at Roland Garros, having won an epic five-setter against David Ferrer in the first round in 2018. He was also involved in a dramatic five-setter last year, when he raced to a two-sets-to-love lead against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, before falling to the Greek in the next three.
A clay court specialist, Munar is 10-8 this year and hasn’t played outside of clay. He reached his first ATP final in Marbella with wins over Fabio Fognini in the Round of 16 and Carlos Alacaraz in the semifinals, but finished runner-up after losing a tight three-set final to Pablo Carreno Busta.
Munar also reached the semifinals in Parma and the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires apart from winning a Challenger event in Antalya and finishing runner-up in two other Challenger tournaments.
Opelka v Munar Prediction and Tip
Munar is a far more accomplished player on clay and will fancy his chances against the 32nd seed. Can’t rule out the possibility of an upset in this contest.
