Kontaveit Back From the Brink of Defeat
Kontaveit was one point away from defeat in her first round match with Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland. However, she dug deep, saved a match point, and ultimately romped away with the third set.
She knows, though, that she had a lucky escape after flirting with disaster against the world no. 72.
After the first three games went to serve, Golubic was the first to be broken, but Kontaveit surrendered her advantage in the very next game and it eventually went to a tie-break which the Swiss player won.
The second set began with the first four games going against serve before Golubic was finally able to hold.
Four more games went against serve until serving to stay in the match, Kontaveit faced match point against her. She managed to do so and it again went to a tie-break, and this time it was Golubic who faltered, and the match was level.
The missed opportunity seemed to deflate Golubic and she was not the same player.. She did not win a single game after that as the Estonia cruised through the fianl set, taking it to love.
Kontaveit could breathe a sigh of relief at the end but it had been a close shave.

Doubles Champion Mladenovic Begins Well
With partner Timea Babos, Mladenovic is the reigning doubles champion at Roland Garros, a title she has won three times, twice with Babos, and once with Caroline Garcia.
She also reached the quarter-finals in singles here in 2017, and will be hoping for another good run after a comfortable first round victory.
Drawn against the Slovak qualifier, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the world 121, the match began with both women coming under pressure on serve, before Schmiedlova was the first to drop hers. The match then went with serve, until it was the Slovak’s turn to break, but parity lasted just a few minutes before Mladenovic broke her once more and then served out.
The second set was totally one-sided with the Frenchwoman taking it to love. So dominant was she that Schmiedlova only won a single point on her serve in the entire set.
