Nishikori Edges Out Khachanov In Another Epic
Kei Nishikori has a mastery on winning five-set contests and on Wednesday, he improved that record to 26-7 with his second successive five-set victory at the 2021 French Open that put him into the third round of the competition.
The Japanese, who trailed Karen Khachanov 1-2 after the first three sets, clinched the last two to win Wednesday’s second-round contest 4-6, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The three-hour-and-59-minute contest followed Nishikori’s four-hour-and-three-minute first-round win over Italian qualifier Alessandro Giannessi.
Nishikori, who had clinched 168 of 312 points in the 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win on Sunday, won 165 of 316 points in the second round on Wednesday.
The win improved the former world No. 4 to 12-10 overall and 6-3 on clay this year.
The 2014 U.S. Open finalist, who has featured in three quarterfinals at Roland Garros, had a 0-3 start to the season, before he finally got going in Rotterdam by reaching the last eight. He also made it to the quarterfinals in Dubai and the Round of 16 in Barcelona and Rome.
Nishikori is a 12-time winner on the tour and has 14 runner-up finishes. He will be hoping to reach the fourth round for the seventh time on Parisian clay.

Laaksonen Shocks 11th Seed Bautista Agut
World No. 150 Henri Laaksonen stunned 11th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday to march into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The Finnish-born Swiss player needed two hours and 21 minutes to dispatch the World No. 11, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in what was his first top 20 victory.
The 29-year-old, who made 18 more unforced errors than Bautista Agut’s 25, struck 53 winners against the Spaniard’s 17 and converted 6 of 15 break points while saving 6 of 9.
In the first round on Sunday, Laaksonen, who has come through the qualifiers, had defeated World No. 93 Yannick Hanfmann of Germany 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 13 minutes.
Wednesday’s win improved the Swiss to 2-4 in the main draws this year. He had lost his first-round matches at Melbourne-1, the Australian Open, Marbella and Geneva.
Laaksonen entered his third French Open main draw after defeating Luca Van Aasche, Juan Pablo Varillas and Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the three qualifying rounds respectively. His last qualifier against Cordoba Open champion Cerundolo was a very close affair, with the Swiss winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Nishikori v Laaksonen Prediction and Tip
Although Nishikori has the best percentage of winning five-set matches, he will still be tired after being taken to the decider in his first two rounds. His opponent, too, has had to deal with a few gruelling duels over the last few days.
It will be a test of fitness for both of them, but expect the experienced Japanese to sail into the next round.
Tip: Nishikori to win AND Both players to win a set: 8/5 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
