After scaling new heights over the last two years that saw her reach her only WTA final and climb to a career-high ranking of 112, Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa has had a dismal 2021, winning just two of her 15 matches.
Both of those two wins came on grass, one at an ITF event in Nottingham and the other in the first qualifying round at Wimbledon, and so the 28-year-old Pole will be fighting a few nerves when she begins her Poland Open campaign on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old plays her best tennis on clay courts and it’s little surprise that she reached her only tour-level final on the surface in Latvia in 2019. Playing as a qualifier, Kawa went all the way to the final of the Baltic Open only to lose a tight three-setter to Anastasija Sevastova.
At the ITF level, five of Kawa’s seven titles and seven of her 10 runner-up finishes have come on clay courts.
Playing at home, she will be looking to start well and get into a rhythm quickly to give her disappointing season some momentum.

Mrdeza Flies Through Qualifiers
Croatia’s Tereza Mrdeza didn’t have much success in Istanbul or Budapest, making first round exits but the qualifier will sense an opportunity in her third WTA tournament of the year, where she begins her campaign against a player who has just not got going this year.
Ranked 223rd in the world, Mrdeza comes into the tournament as a lucky loser. She defeated Russia’s Varvara Flink in straight sets in the first qualifying round on Saturday, but fell to Italy’s Federica di Sara in the second qualifying round on Sunday.
The 30-year-old Croatian is an eight-time champion and 18-time runner-up at the ITF Circuit, winning six of those titles on clay.
She has a 24-18 win-loss record this year, with her best being a semifinal finish at an ITF tournament in Spain, which was also a clay-court event.
Kawa v Mrdeza Prediction and Tip
While Kawa is the higher-ranked player, form favours Mrdeza. Expect the Croatian to advance.
