Alcaraz Rallies to Beat Pouille

Playing as a seeded player for the first time at an ATP tournament, Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz fought back from a set down to defeat France’s Lucas Pouille 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round in Umag.

Pouille, the 2019 Australian Open semifinalist, got the only break of the first set, but Alcaraz rebounded with three breaks in the second and three in the third to move into the Round of 16 and improve to 11-10 in 2021.

Ranked 73rd in the world, the Spaniard, who won the Oeiras 3 Challenger earlier this year, has been impressive on clay this season, improving to 7-5 on the tour following the opening round win.

A semifinalist in Marbella, Alcaraz also had a fascinating run at the French Open, reaching the third round after coming through the qualifiers. On Thursday, he will be aiming to reach a second quarterfinal of his career.

Martin Ends Olivo’s Resistance

Blown away in the first set by Argentine lucky loser Renzo Olivo, Slovakia’s Andrej Martin roared back into the contest, forcing the decider, but then needed four match points to finally end the World No. 215’s resilience and move into the Round of 16.

Martin won the two-hour-and-37-minute contest 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). The Slovak faced as many as 20 break points in the match, but he saved 14 of them.

The 117th-ranked player was a finalist in Umag five years ago, finishing runner-up to Fabio Fognini. He had an ordinary start to 2021, but struck form in Belgrade-2, reaching the semifinals before being edged out by Novak Djokovic. Tuesday’s victory improved him to 6-10 in 2021.

Alcaraz v Martin Prediction and Tip

Martin is a decent clay court player and also has a fair amount of experience playing in Umag. Although he is ranked lower than the much talked about teenager, he will prove to be a difficult opponent to beat. Alcaraz’s consistency however gives him a slight edge in the contest.
