Schwartzman Sees Off Varillas

World No. 13 Diego Schwartzman moved into the second round with a straight sets win over Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas. It wasn’t an easy victory for the Argentine who had to slog it out for over two hours before closing out the contest 7-5, 6-4.

Schwartzman had 11 break point opportunities in the match, but a determined Varillas saved nine of them, not allowing the eighth seed to run away with the contest. The Argentine got his crucial breaks in the 11th game of the first set and in the ninth of the second. Varillas too had four break points in the match, but Schwartzman saved all four of them.

A terrific clay-court player, Schwartzman has come to Tokyo having won 18 and lost 12 matches this year. He also won his fourth career title, capturing the crown at home in Buenos Aires.

Machac Fights Back to Keep His Challenge Alive

Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac came back after losing the first set to beat Portugal’s Joao Sousa on Sunday and advance into the next round.

Both players had two breaks each in the first set, with Sousa edging out Machac in the tiebreak. The 20-year-old Czech, however, bounced back into the contest getting an early break in the second set and then holding on the lead to force the decider.

He was equally good in the third set, getting the only break in the fifth game of the set and then serving it out for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4 win in two hours and 34 minutes.

Ranked 145th in the world, Machac has produced some of his best results on hard courts and won the Nur Sultan Challenger earlier this year.
