Elina Svitolina v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

Svitolina leads Tomljanovic by 3-0, last defeating her in the 2018 French Open in straight sets.

Svitolina Survives Siegemund

Elina Svitolina arrived for the Games on the back of an uneventful few months on the WTA Tour. Seeded number four here in Tokyo, her last decent run of any sorts came back in the Italian Open where she was a quarterfinalist.

Since then, she has been beaten in the early rounds of the Bett1Open, Eastbourne International, and the Wimbledon Championships. Her loss in London was particularly surprising as it came at the hands of the #44 ranked Magda Linette.

Needless to mention, the precedent is not only set for Tomljanovic to deliver the upset, but the odds also seem to be swinging in her favour.

Svitolina had to work hard to win her opening match in the Olympics. Facing Laura Siegemund of Germany, the Ukrainian needed over two hours to win the match 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. That said, as a two-time Grand Slam semifinalist and a top 10 player, she has the skills and experience needed to turn the tide around and quickly find her groove.

Tomljanovic Moves Past Shvedova

Ajla Tomljanovic, in stark contrast, had a relatively easier fixture in her opening round bout of the women’s singles here in Tokyo. She faced Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova, who retired in the second set after being down 5-7, 2-3 due to health concerns.

Currently ranked World No. 51, the 28-year-old Australian arrived for the Summer Games after registering one of her best performances on the WTA Tour, as well as in a major.

She reached the quarterfinal at the SW19 earlier this month, ultimately losing to Ash Barty. Until that point in the season, Tomljanovic had never made it past the second round in any tournament.

Sailing high on confidence and momentum, she now faces a player who was a quarterfinalist in the Rio Olympics. Can she stop her run earlier this time around?

Svitolina v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Svitolina may be considerably ahead in terms of trophies and wins but we all know that it doesn’t matter much when you are competing on a stage like the Olympics. Tomljanovic looks sharp enough to give the Ukrainian a solid fight and possibly, go the distance. Expect an entertaining tennis match.
