Aleksandra Krunic v Anna Karolina Schmiedlova Head to Head
At tour level, Krunic has a 2-0 winning record over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Both of those matches came in 2015, and were played on hard courts.

Krunic Surprises Third Seed Bogdan
There was a little stat doing the rounds before the Round of 16 matches. Ana Bogdan had won the first set in her last 10 straight matches when facing a younger opponent on clay. But that changed when came up against Serbia’s Aleksandra Krunic on Wednesday.
Krunic – a qualifier who has not dropped a set all week – bamboozled the Romanian third seed with a mixture of slices, drop shots, and some heavy-hitting from the baseline. She broke Bogdan in the second game of the first set, and kept consolidating until she locked the first set in the bag. Krunic lost eight points on serve in a clinical set.
Bogdan was being cheered by a vociferous home crowd but was unable to summon her resilience. She succumbed to Krunic’s resourcefulness in the second set as the qualifier raced into a 4-0 lead. While eventually, Krunic’s level dipped at 5-2, it was just a minor blip. She secured her third service break of the set to confirm her progress.
The Moscow-born Serbian has now reached her first WTA quarterfinal since Guangzhou in 2018.

Schmiedlova Extends Winning Streak
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova extended her winning streak to seven matches with the dissection of World No. 114 Kaja Juvan on Wednesday.
The Slovak needed to save three set points in the first set tiebreak (one against serve), before sealing it 9-7. Juvan never quite recovered from that mishap. She was easily dispatched by Schmiedlova’s barrage of winners. The World No. 99 won 100% of first-serve points in the second set and served it out 6-0.
Schmiedlvova has been one of many players who have been hard done by the rankings freeze when Covid struck. She had been stuck outside the top 100 since September 2019. That was partly due to her bad luck with injuries. But after a successful week in Serbia, she has now re-entered the world’s top 100 once more.
Schimedlova had won the inaugural Belgrade Ladies Open a week ago – her fourth career title – and looks a solid outright winner at this weeks’ Romanian Open.
Krunic v Schmiedlova Prediction and Tip
Krunic looks well priced to at least take a set off the in-form Schmiedlova. The Serbian has used the drop shot and that deft slice with maximum efficiency. If Krunic resorts to disturb Schmiedlova’s rhythm in the manner she did to Bogdan, we might see signs of frustration from the Belgrade champion.
