Jessica Pegula v Anett Kontaveit Head to Head

Pegula, the World No. 28 will play Kontaveit who is just a spot above her in the rankings for the first time.

Pegula Searches Early Season Form

With Jessica Pegula certain to get a seeding spot at the final Grand Slam of the season, she will be keen to head to the US Open in a rich vein of form.

Pegula played her best tennis in the first half of the season culminating in as many as six top-10 wins (beating Karolina Pliskova multiple times and the Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka). The American’s form has since gone off the boil a little bit, but she will be delighted to return to hard courts.

The 27-year-old has garnered 14 wins on the surface and has jumped over 20 spots in the world rankings. However, she was easily beaten by Belinda Bencic, the Olympic gold medalist, in the first round in Tokyo. Her campaign in doubles alongside Bethanie Mattek-Sands ended in the quarterfinals.

Pegula has won one career title (Washington 2019), and finished runner-up to Serena Williams in her other final appearance in Auckland last season.

Kontaveit Beaten By Sakkari In Tokyo

Like Pegula, Anett Kontaveit was the beneficiary of a tough opener at the Tokyo Olympics. Kontaveit drew the World No. 19 Maria Sakkari. And although she led 5-2 in the first set, the Greek reeled five straight games to take the set against the run of play.

Kontaveit won two more games after that collapse and ceded the match, ending Estonia’s hopes of a medal win at the tennis tournament. Her latest defeat extends her losing streak to three matches. Since losing to Jelena Ostapenko in the Eastbourne final, Kontaveit also suffered an early exit at the Wimbledon Championships.

The 25-year-old has only made one main draw appearance in Canada before this, losing in the second round to Petra Kvitova in 2018.

However, Kontaveit has recorded strong results on the surface this year such as reaching the final of the Grampians Trophy (and sharing the prize money with finalist Ann Li because the final could not be played due to the commencement of the Australian Open in a short time).

With 10 wins on hard courts this season, Kontaveit is adamant about flourishing on the surface as the North American summer season gets underway.

Pegula v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

Both players had disappointing campaigns in Tokyo and will be keen to return to winning ways. There is very little to separate these two, but we do like Pegula’s chances of getting the W on Monday.
