Tormo, Looking Confident in New York

Sara Sorribes Tormo is enjoying a great run in the North American swing. A quarterfinalist in the Canadian Open, Tormo later reached the semifinal at the WTA Cleveland to build some momentum for the US Open.

So far in New York, she has thrived beautifully with straight-set wins over Karolina Muchova and Su-Wei Hsieh. The game against Hsieh was particularly interesting as Tormo hit just 11 winners to her opponents’ 15, but was propelled to victory by the latter’s 41 unforced errors.

The 24-year-old has been quite impressive on hard courts this season. Her highlights include a quarterfinal stint in WTA Abu Dhabi, a title run in WTA Guadalajara (her first WTA title), and penultimate rounds WTA Monterrey and the Miami Open. On clay, Tormo’s form took a sharp hit but she bounced back on the grass with a semifinal run in Bad Homburg.

Raducanu, On a Roll

18-year-old Emma Raducanu is looking to build on her breakthrough season and so far, she is definitely on track.

Following that sensational run at Wimbledon where she reached the fourth round, Raducanu reached the quarterfinal in ITF Landisville (as a qualifier) while most recently, she was the runner-up at the WTA125K in Chicago (losing to Clara Tauson in the final).

At the Flushing Meadows, Raducanu started as a qualifier and moved past Bibiane Schoofs, Mariam Bolkvadze, and Maiar Sherif in straight sets to reach the main draw.

In the opener, the Brit moved past Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-3, to set up the round two clash with Shuai Zhang. That match lasted for an hour and 23 minutes and saw Raducanu win 6-2, 6-4. She was the superior player in that game in every aspect, having kept a first service win rate of 85% and striking 27 winners.

Tormo v Raducanu Prediction and Tip

World No. 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo will start as the favourite, not just because of her overall experience but also owing to her recent form which, if we are being frank, is significantly better than Raducanu’s.

That said, the teenager has a spark of destiny towards her and it is not unheard of youngsters toppling the order to move up in the rankings. All in all, expect a good game of tennis that can likely go either way.
