Aslan Karatsev proved too hot to handle in the Kremlin Cup final. He took his breathtaking 2021 season into new heights, dismissing sixth-seeded Marin Cilic 6-2 6-4 in 77 minutes. And as a consequence, he cracked the Top 20 for the first time in his career.
Cilic, a two-time champion at the event, made a horrible start to the final. He was broken in the opening game and resorted to playing catchup for the set. Unfortunately for the Croat, the Russian was serving lights out. Karatsev dropped just one point behind his first serve in a dominant first set.
In the second set, Karatsev secured a crucial break of serve in the seventh game that proved enough to steer him across the finish line. The victory was an important step in Karatsev’s hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals. He sits 675 points behind Hubert Hurkacz, but as many as five players are vying for the last two spots.
Karatsev will attempt to address a poor record in St. Petersburg. He was one main draw win from four previous visits. Having received a bye in the first round, he has equaled his best showing from 2020 without striking a ball. But just like in Moscow, it could be another week where he makes it right.

Millman Dispatches Oliel
John Millman was in action in the first round on Tuesday. And it was hands down a stroll in the park for the World no. 57. The Australian won 6-1 6-1 in just 66 minutes and improves to 7-5 on indoor hard courts in 2021.
Millman played an ATP debutant Yshai Oliel who is comfortably Israel’s No. 1 player right now, but well outside the world’s Top 300 in the rankings. The drubbing at the hands of Millman made a mockery of Oliel’s wild card entrant considering he had a fairly pedestrian record on the Challenger Tour.
Millman dropped six points behind his first serve in the entire match, and just four behind his second delivery. He outmuscled Oliel with his physicality and consistent depth in his shots, breaking the Israeli five times during the afternoon.
Thursday’s match against Karatsev will be Millman’s 47th of the season. Only once has achieved that figure (2019), and will certainly need a big performance to beat it.
Karatsev v Millman Prediction and Tip
With Hurkacz losing early in Vienna, this opens the door for at least three players to narrow the gap in the Race. And Karatsev is one of them. The Russian is in a rich vein of form and looks poised to maintain his winning streak albeit in a tough contest.
