Hubert Hurkacz v Diego Schwartzman Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their previous two meetings. While Hurkacz won at the ATP Cup in 2020, Schwartzman won on clay in Rome the same year. Both the matches went the distance and in both of them the player winning the first set went on to lose the match.

Hurkacz Survives a Scare

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz dropped the first set against World No. 570 Aleksandre Metreveli of Georgia on Monday, before forging his way back into the contest for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-1 victory.

The World No. 9 was supposed to meet Nikoloz Basilashvili in the singles match, but the latter withdrew from the contest, and Metreveli took his place.

Neither Hurkacz nor Metreveli could break each other’s serve in the first set with the latter taking the set in the tiebreaker. Faced by the prospect of a massive upset, Hurkacz took control of things in the second, breaking Metreveli in the very first game of the second and then again the last game of the set to draw level.

The Pole kept the momentum going in the decider, breaking the Georgian two more times to clinch the contest in two hours and four minutes.

It was the second straight match for Hurkacz where his intended opponent was replaced by a much lower-ranked player.

Against Greece on Saturday, Hurkacz was supposed to play Stefanos Tsitsipas, but the World No. 4 pulled out of the singles as a precautionary measure to give more time for his elbow to heal. Instead World N0. 1078 Aristotelis Thanos took the court and was overpowered by the Pole in straight sets.

A winner of three titles last year, including a maiden Masters 1000 title in Miami, Hurkacz has now extended his perfect ATP Cup record to 5-0. The 24-year-old, who was 36-23 last season, had won all his ATP Cup singles matches in the inaugural edition in 2020.

Poland also won the No. 2 singles and the doubles match to beat Georgia 3-0. They had won their tie on Saturday as well, but with a 2-1 margin having lost the doubles contest.

Poland are second in Group D, behind Argentina, who are 6-0 from the two ties. Wednesday’s tie between Argentina and Poland is now the decider with the winner going through to the semifinals.

Schwartzman Rallies Past Tsitsipas

Diego Schwartzman rallied from a set down to beat World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece as Argentina won a second straight tie 3-0 to go on top of Group D.

Schwartzman, who thrashed Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles on Saturday, needed two hours and 44 minutes to beat Tsitsipas 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3.

The Argentine won 77% first serve points and converted 4 of 13 break points, while saving three of four in the match.

Following Monday’s win, Schwartzman improved his ATP Cup record to 4-4.

The World No. 13 had a 38-23 record last year, which included a run to the title in Buenos Aires in March. He also finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Antwerp.

Hurkacz v Schwartzman Prediction and Tip

They have been involved in two edge-of-the-seat battles and their third meeting is expected to be another thriller. Hurkacz is yet to play a strong opponent this year, and yet struggled against Metreveli on Monday.

In contrast, Schwartzman has played two solid opponents, beating both of them. The Argentine will therefore have a slight advantage going into the match. He could end Hurkacz’s perfect run in the tournament with another three-set win.
