Jessica Pegula v Caroline Garcia Head to Head

Pegula holds a 2-0 lead over Garcia, last defeating her in the Wimbledon last year with 6-3, 6-1.

Pegula, Fresh Off a Doubles Title

Jessica Pegula enjoyed a great start to the 2022 season in Australia. Playing in Melbourne Set 2 last week, she moved on to win the doubles trophy with her compatriot Asia Muhammad, defeating the pairing of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in the final.

In the singles draw, however, Pegula fell in the opener to Irina-Camelia Begu in straight sets.

Nonetheless, the current World No. 22 has proven herself to be a rather challenging opponent in recent seasons. Last year, she moved up some 40 places in the singles ranking to end the year as #18 – a success built upon penultimate round appearances in several tournaments.

After reaching the quarterfinal in the Australian Open, the 27-year-old made it to the semis in Qatar (as a qualifier) and later, reached a similar stage in Dubai, Rome, Montreal, and Indian Wells.

During these events, Pegula defeated many big names like Elina Svitolina, Karolina Pliskova, Naomi Osaka, and Victoria Azarenka.

Although she lacks a singles title of late, it seems to be only a matter of time more than anything else before that changes.

Garcia, Seeking Solace in Sydney

Once a top-five player, Caroline Garcia appears to have faded from the tennis scene altogether. Over the last few seasons, her ranking has dropped gradually as she now finds herself in the mid-70s.

A majority of Garcia’s 2021 spell is dotted with early-round exits, spread across the Australian swing, clay tournaments, and grass events. There were only three notable instances when the 28-year-old reached the quarterfinal and beyond: WTA Parma, Lausanne Open, and Limoges Challenger.

Garcia began the 2022 season, seeking her first singles title since the 2019 Nottingham Open. The Frenchwoman, like Pegula, also featured in Melbourne Set 2 but fell to Anastasija Sevastova in the first round with 4-6, 4-6.

Pegula v Garcia Prediction and Tip

Garcia is in a rut and Pegula is positioned superbly to capitalise on it. Expect a win for the American although, she may have to work for it.
