Anisimova Eases Past Haddad Maia
A shock loss in the first round at Dubai last week did not deter Anisimova from putting her best foot forward in her opening round encounter here in Doha. She rolled into the second round with a straight-set win over Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Needing nearly an hour and a half, Anisimova was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over her Brazilian opponent.
An early break in the first set should have sealed the deal for the American but as she served for it, Haddad Maia broke back to level things out. Anisimova resurrected quickly though to seal the set.
A couple of early breaks in the second set all but guided her through despite a sterling comeback from her opponent when she broke back twice to make it 5-4. Anisimova broke back to finish off the match.
Anisimova will need to do a lot better than that when she takes to court against the world number 13.

Ostapenko Continues Winning Run
With a semifinal appearance at the St. Petersburg Open and a title win in Dubai last week, Ostapenko has been in the form of her life.
And by defeating Oceane Dodin in her opener here, she registered her sixth successive win and improved to 9-1 over the last 10 matches.
Much like what happened in the final in Dubai, Ostapenko did not have to break into much of a sweat as she romped to a 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 23 minutes.
The Latvian number one did not get off to the best of starts though as she was broken twice very early but once she re-found her rhythm, there was no looking back.
Ostapenko missed four set-points before carving out the opening set off her fifth and then broke her opponent thrice in the second set to complete the victory.

While Ostapenko will be a favourite here to win her seventh match in a row, Anisimova would like to believe she could take advantage of her opponent’s serving and exhaustion from all the tennis she has played in a matter of days.
