Alexander Zverev v Jenson Brooksby Head to Head

World No. 3 Alexander Zverev defeated Brooksby in their only meeting before this in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters last season.

Zverev Begins Title Defense

Alexander Zverev will face stiff competition in his quest to defend his Acapulco crown. Five of the world’s Top 10 players will be at the Mexican Open for the next seven days including Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. The German’s chances of winning the title have dimmed amid a handful of star players.

But he has a fine record on these shores, which largely explains why he is making a customary visit to Acapulco. He has never lost before the Round of 16 at this event, while he also reached the semifinal on his debut appearance in 2018.

Zverev’s gamble to take a wild card in Marseille earlier this month nearly paid off as he reached the final without dropping a set. But he was hit with a sucker punch by Alexander Bublik in the final as the Kazakh surprisingly won his maiden title in convincing fashion.

The scars from his Australian Open fourth-round exit are still visible. Zverev was one of the pre-tournament favorites to leave Melbourne with the silver but was outperformed by Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.

But having risen to World No. 3, Zverev is a player who hasn’t reached his highest ceiling. That could potentially be unwelcome news to his closest challengers.

Brooksby Bounces Back After Covid Recovery

We will never know just how much damage Jenson Brooksby would have inflicted at this year’s Australian Open. After being painfully forced to skip the year’s first Major for testing positive of Covid-19, Brooksby watched the tournament in agony as he did not partake to build on his magical run at the US Open last year.

Brooksby had an incredible breakout year in 2021 that he was voted as the ATP Newcomer of the Year last season. Among a long list of milestones he ticked off include: a first ATP final, three Challenger Tour titles, a Top 60 after starting the season outside the Top 150, and fittingly the aforementioned fourth-round run at a Grand Slam in New York.

Brooksby has since played two events on home soil after making full recovery from Covid. He reached the semifinals of the Columbus Challenger at the end of January as he eased his way into action.

But it was at the newly minted Dallas Open where he came of age, beating the likes of Jordan Thompson and Marcos Giron en route to the final where he lost to Reilly Opelka.

Zverev v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

While this is a nightmare opener for young Brooksby, the same could be said of Zverev who would have keenly preferred a different name in his opening match. Nonetheless, the defending champion should have extra zip in his ground strokes to overpower the 21-year-old upstart.
