Jannik Sinner v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head

There have been two meetings before this between Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz, with the head-to-head locked at 1-1. The first one was the Miami Masters final which was won by the Pole in straight sets. However, Sinner avenged that defeat at the ATP Finals on home soil towards the end of the year.

Sinner Beats Former Champion Murray

Jannik Sinner had looked down and out a round earlier against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and needed to stave off three match points to stay alive and kicking at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

The Italian had backed up that win with a resounding victory over former champion Andy Murray. He faced zero break points in whole match, whilst at the same time, broke Murray at will.

The World No. 10 won 83%  first-serve points and broke Murray three times. In a tight first set, Murray had gone toe-to-toe with the young Italian as he demonstrated his improving physical fitness levels. But a dud game late in the set cost him big time.

Sinner broke to love in game 11 and went on to take a one-set lead. In the second set, the writing was pretty much on the wall as Murray was broken again to start the set. And Sinner showed little emphathy towards the three-time Grand Slam winner as he breezed throguh into the last eight.

Hurkacz Secures Back-To-Back Wins

Hubert Hurkacz has looked in fine fettle at this week’s Dubai Tennis Championships, almost reminiscent to the good work he did at the ATP Cup.

The Polish No. 1 completed the 72-minute dissection of Slovakian lucky loser Alex Molcan in the afternoon’s early kickoff. He won 6-3 6-2 –  his second straight-set win in as many days.

Hurkacz lost just four points behind his first serve, which translated to about 88% first-serve points won. He suffocated the court with monstrous ground strokes that gave little room for Molcan to express himself.

Hurkacz has not been broken in two matches this week, snuffing out six break points in the process. But he will face his first major test against his good friend Jannik Sinner in a mouthwatering quarterfinal match.

Sinner v Hurkacz Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz has found form almost in time for his Miami Masters title defense next month. His serve has looked unbreakable, beating an in-form Bublik without facing a single break point. Sinner will put him under constant pressure, but I expect the Pole to give a better account of himself than last year’s ATP Finals match.
