Sara Sorribes Tormo v Magdalena Frech Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.

Tormo Moves Past Volynets

Defending champion Sara Sorribes Tormo started her journey in the 2022 Abierto Zapopan with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Katie Volynets. The match lasted for two hours with the first set alone going for 84 minutes. The Spaniard faced some resistance initially but managed to subdue her opponent in the second set.

Starting as the number three seed in Guadalajara, Tormo arrived for the tournament with her career-best ranking as World No. 32.

However, her season so far does not really do justice to her progress on the WTA Tour. Tormo has succumbed in the second rounds of Melbourne 2 and the Australian Open, respectively to Kamilla Rakhimova and Marta Kostyuk.

Such was the case for most of the last season, at least in the second half.

In the first leg of the season, Tormo made great strides by winning her maiden WTA title in Guadalajara and later reaching the semifinal in Monterrey, a quarterfinal in the Miami Open (beating Elena Rybakina and Ons Jabeur en route), and the semis again in Bad Homburg.

Frech Survives Zarazua

Magdalena Frech had to battle hard to earn the win here. Facing Renata Zarazúa in the opener, it took the Pole a little over three hours to take the match 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4.

The 24-year-old has now posted her best results on the WTA Tour in 2022. Frech was yet to win a main-draw match this season, having lost in the opening rounds in Sydney and the Australian Open. Her last attempt of doing so was unsuccessful in Dubai where she was beaten in the qualifiers.

Currently ranked World No. 97, Frech has come a long way on the tour since last year but still has ways to go. She won the Thoreau Challenger last year, in addition to winning an ITF event in Prague. But unlike Tormo, she lacks the main tour experience and can benefit by spending more time on the circuit.

Tormo v Frech Prediction and Tip

Tormo is the clear favourite here – she has the experience, pedigree, and an overall superior form that should help her prevail over Frech.
