Jasmine Paolini v Tamara Korpatsch Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in a clay tournament on the junior tour six years ago, Korpatsch winning in straight sets.

Paolini Struggles Past Romanian

Paolini came into Lyon at her highest ever world ranking, having reached the final of the doubles of the Melbourne Summer Set event in January.

And she seemed to have an easy draw in the form of the Romanian world number 114, Irina Maria Bara of Romania, but the match did not go entirely to plan for Paolini.

It was the Italian who was the first to drop her serve in the first set. She missed a break point to recover that in the next game, and Bara held on to claim the set,

The pair swapped breaks early in the second set, but this time it was Paolini who then went a break up. She could not shake Bara off though, and the Romania hit back to level, only to falter when serving to stay in the set, dropping her serve again at the crucial moment.

Paolini held break points early in the third set and looked like she might live to regret not converting any of them when she was broken in turn.

Bara though, could not take advantage, was broken herself, then dropped her serve once more, giving Paolini the chance to finally close out the match.

Qualifier Korpatsch Defeats Local Player

This is the first time that Korpatsch has appeared in the main draw of a WTA event since Gdynia in Poland last July, and she had to come through two rounds of qualifying first to do so, progressing past Anna Blinkova of Russia and then Ylena In-Albon of Switzerland.

There she met Oceane Dodin of France, the world number 93, in a match that fluctuated first one way and then the other.

The first set was scrappy, with numerous beak points created – some were converted and others saved.

Dodin was the first to drop her serve, only to immediately level, a pattern that was then repeated. Korpatsch, though, broke once more and, this time, held on to her advantage.

The momentum then swung the other way when Korpatsch was broken early in the second set. Another break enabled Dodin to consolidate her position and the match was level.

At that point, the Frenchwoman seemed favourite, but the pendulum swung back the other way when she was broken early in the third set.

Another break gave Korpatsch the chance to serve for the match, and she had five match points only for Dodin to save all of them, and get one of the breaks back.

But Dodin then dropped her serve again and that was curtains for her chances.

Paolini v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip

Based on world rankings alone, Paolini should start favourite for this match, but she will have to play better than she did against the Romanian if she wants to reach the quarter-finals in Lyon.
