Clara Tauson v Beatriz Haddad Maia Head to Head

The two players have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Maia, Coming Off a Decent Streak

25-year-old Beatriz Haddad Maia had a good build-up to the BNP Paribas Open. Competing in the Monterrey Open last week, she made it as far as the semifinal by upsetting the likes of Xinyu Wang and Marie Bouzkova en route. She carried this form forward with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Sofia Kenin in the opener.

While she ultimately lost to Leylah Fernandez, Maia did make it to the first WTA semis since the 2019 Bogota. Her current form has also propelled her to the #61 position in the rankings.

The Brazilian enjoyed quite a bit of success on the ITF circuit last season; she won five titles there to end the season inside the top 100 – after starting the year in mid 300s. That’s an astronomical leap of over 200 places – an impressive feat by all means.

Maia is now starting to focus more on the WTA Tour. Although she lost her opening-round bouts in Doha, Melbourne, and Sydney, the valuable experience she gained there ought to help her improve her play.

Moreover, Maia has done well on the doubles circuit – she won the Sydney title with Anna Danilina and reached the final in the Melbourne Slam, losing to the pairing of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

Tauson Makes her Indian Wells Debut

World No. 40 Clara Tauson – seeded number 29 for the tournament – is making her debut at the BNP Paribas Open.

Like Maia, the 19-year-old also enjoyed a terrific season last year. She won two ITF titles, two WTA titles, and one WTA Challenger trophy to crack the top 50 after the year in the mid 150s. It is worth noting that Tauson has racked up more WTA experience by playing with the elites and beating a few top 10 players (Sara Errani, Jelena Ostapenko, Anett Kontaveit, and Paula Badosa) in the process.

So far in 2022, the Dane has had a rather average run. She lost in the third round in both her Australian events while in Dubai and Doha, she incurred a similar feat by losing early.

Tauson v Maia Prediction and Tip

Tauson is starting as the odds-on favourite but Maia has a very good chance to carve the upset. She is experienced, has a fair bit of momentum on her side, and certainly looks confident. While Tauson has proven herself to be a worthy opponent, her lack of form of late may not bode well for her here.
