Jaume Munar v Taro Daniel Head to Head

Munar leads 1-0 on the tour and 3-1 overall, having beaten Daniel twice at the Challenger level. His only defeat against the Japanese came at the qualifying round in Barcelona in 2017.

This will be their first meeting on hard court. All their meetings so far have been on clay.

Munar Comes Through Qualifiers

Jaume Munar made it to the main draw of the Miami Open for the second time in his career as the Spaniard defeated Sweden’s Elias Ymer 7-5, 6-3 in the second qualifying round on Tuesday.

The World no. 89 had earlier beaten Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round.

Munar, who prefers the clay to hard surfaces, also qualified for the Indian Wells Open this month and put up a fine display, reaching the third round of the tournament — his best at an ATP 1000 tournament. On the way he stunned Pablo Carreño Busta in the second round and took Taylor Fritz to the third set before going down fighting.

Coming in with that sort of form, Munar will be expected to do well in Miami as well. The 24-year-old is 8-8 for the season. He was a quarterfinalist in the season opener in Melbourne but slid down the rankings following a string of poor performances. His problem was winning two matches in a row. The Indian Wells showing helped him get back up in the rankings to reach No. 89.

How far will he go in Miami?

Daniel Ousts Fratangelo to Qualify

A third round appearance at the Australian Open — his best ever showing at a Grand Slam — has been the highlight of Taro Daniel’s season so far. What’s more, that run at the Melbourne major included a stunning win over Andy Murray in the second round. Murray avenged that defeat to Daniel in the first round at Indian Wells though.

On Tuesday, the 106th ranked Daniel qualified for a main draw of a tour-level tournament for a fifth time this year as he defeated the United States’ Bjorn Fratangelo in the second qualifying round. The 6-1, 7-6 win followed a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Australia’s Max Purcell in the first qualifying round.

The 29-year-old had also come through the qualifiers at Adelaide International, the Australian Open, Dubai Open and the Indian Wells Open and he went on to win the first round of the first three tournaments. Overall, Daniel is 5-6 in the main draws this year. This will be his second try in Miami. He was ousted in the first round last year by Andrey Rublev.

Munar v Daniel Prediction and Tip

Munar has a superior record against the Japanese and is also in great form. Expect him to advance for a second round meeting with Fabio Fognini.
