Federico Delbonis has always been a very good clay-court tennis player and he will certainly look forward to the season moving there. He had a solid run in South America with expected struggles in North America. Now, moving back to European clay, Delbonis will certainly look to gather some points and improve his ranking.
The Argentinian has a very strong game consisting of a powerful serve that can set up a lot of quick points which is crucial for him. He doesn’t enjoy being dragged into long rallies which most clay specialists like doing. Delbonis is on a 4-match losing streak at the moment and he is desperate to change that in Marrakech.
A first-round matchup against Sousa should be good for him as he had success against him in the past. If he can find that form quickly he will be a dangerous opponent many would want to avoid during the course of this clay season.

Great Start for Sousa With a Slow Decline
Joao Sousa opened the year with a title run in Pune which was something he was waiting on for a long time. It was not a strong draw and he took advantage of that in a superb fashion. He defeated Emil Ruusuvuori in the final so that win is a notable one that needs to be praised.
Since then it’s been quite bad. He’s lost a couple of matches that were quite close and that affected his confidence. He lost the final three matches he played and he will be looking to change that on clay. Sousa has played a lot of matches on clay and he’s been quite good on it.
Recently though his clay performances have left a lot to be desired as his movement is not as sharp as it once was. As for most players, his level largely depends on his confidence and recently it’s not been good. Can he muster up enough to take down Delbonis, find out below.

So they have played seven times over the years and Delbonis holds the narrow 4-3 lead. Generally, their matches don’t tend to be that close and the winning side was usually the players who was having the better year at that time. It’s a lot about confidence for both players and neither are in high spirits at the moment.
Both have lost consecutive matches but only one can snap the losing streeak. Generally speaking, Delbonis had the upper hand in the past couple of years which coincide with his rise on Tour. That makes me believe that while he is struggling he should in theory be favoured to win this match.
I think at this stage in their careers that he is the better clay player and I think he has shown more. Sousa won Pune but outside of Pune, he didn’t do much. I won’t overthink this too much and go with Delbonis who I think is better right now.
