Paula Badosa v Anna Bondar Head to Head

Badosa and Bondar have never faced off before this in a competitive encounter.

Badosa Hoping to Shrug off Illness

With one WTA title under her belt already, Badosa would have been expected to do better than her fourth round exit at Australian Open. Not to mention the opening exit in Dubai and a second round loss that followed in Doha.

But a semifinal appearance at Indian Wells Open followed soon after, with a defeat to Maria Sakkari preventing her from making the title-decider. And later in Miami, Badosa won three matches in a row to reach the quarterfinals, only to retire from her match against Jessica Pegula because of a viral illness.

It’s not been too many days since that retirement, and the question that everyone would be asking is if Badosa is fit enough to make that switch from hard court to clay coming into this tournament in Charleston.

In her only previous appearance here last season, Badosa had made it as far as the semifinal.

Bondar Cruises Past Hartono

It didn’t take Bondar too much time to get past Arianne Hortono in the first round here to set up this meeting with the second seeded Badosa.

The world number 73 was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Hortono, needing an hour and 34 minutes to get past her 165th-ranked opponent.

Slamming four aces and winning 73% of her first serve points, Bondar broke her opponent four times in the encounter and while she was stretched in the second set, the Hungarian got past Hartono’s serve when it really mattered.

Bondar hadn’t shown too much form coming into this tournament though, with barely any main draw wins to show for – only once has she managed two successive wins this season and that came in Lyon thanks to Katie Boulter’s retirement from their match.

Against Badosa, she might think she has a chance because of her opponent’s potential illnesses but can she take advantage of that?

Badosa v Bondar Prediction and Tip

Badosa is a favourite by some distance here but it will need her to be fully fit to get going on clay. Bondar winning a set might be worth a bet.
