Sakkari on a Three-Match Losing Streak

Maria Sakkari has been in terrific form this year, but ever since losing to Iga Swiatek in the final of the Indian Wells Open, she has lost two more matches and comes to the tournament having lost her last three.

The 4-6, 1-6 defeat to Swiatek was followed by a shock three-set defeat to Beatriz Haddad Maia in Miami and then in Stuttgart last week, Sakkari suffered another upset, falling to Laura Siegemund in the Round of 16. The greek was down 4-6, 1-3 in the match when she retired due to a GI illness.

Currently ranked No. 5 in the world, Sakkari is 16-7 this year, and that includes runs to two finals in St. Petersburg and Indian Wells. She was also a semifinalist in Qatar, where agains it was Swiatek who ended her run.

The fourth seed is 2-3 in the main draws in Madrid, with both the wins coming last year when she reached the third round. She has a 58% win record on clay courts and her only tour-level title came on clay in Rabat in 2019.

Keys In Decent Touch

With a title in Adelaide-2, followed by a run to the semifinals at the Australian Open, Madison Keys had a brilliant start to the season. A couple of early setbacks followed as well, but overall Keys has been in decent form.

The World No. 22 was also a quarterfinalist in Indian Wells. In her previous tournament in Charleston, she suffered a Round of 16 defeat to Belinda Bencic.

The 27-year-old has a 15-7 win-loss record. The win in Adelaide was her seventh career title from 11 finals. When it comes to clay, Keys finished runner-up at the Italian Open in 2016 and won the title in Charleston in 2019. She was also a finalist in Charleston in 2015.

Overall she has a 62% win record on clay. She didn’t have a great time on clay last two years, but with form on her side this season, she will hope to make up for the two seasons now.
