Badosa Breezes Past Kudermetova
Last year’s semifinalist, Paula Badosa made a solid start to this year’s edition of the Madrid Open, dispatching Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova in just 66 minutes.
The Spaniard, who this week peaked to her career-best ranking of No. 2, was given a tough fight by the World no. 25 in the first set, as she held five break points in the set, but Badosa was equal to her task. She saved all the five break points and converted the only one that she held in the eighth game to take the first set.
It was a breeze for the Spaniard from that point on. She won all her service games to love in the second set and dropped just six return points, winning 14 of 20 to bagel Kudermetova and wrap up the contest 6-3, 6-0.
The 24-year-old, who began the season by winning her third tour-level title in Sydney, has been in hot form over the last four tournaments. She reached the semifinals in Indian Wells, the quarterfinals in Miami, the last eight in Charleston and the final four in Stuttgart.
She has a 71% win record on clay and triumphed in Belgrade last season for her only clay-court title. Last year, she was a surprise semifinalist in Madrid, defeating Barbora Krejcikova and Belinda bencic en route, but she couldn’t reach a final, falling to Ash Barty.
Can she reach that far again this season? All depends on how she plays in the next round. If she does beat Halep then she could be headed for a deep run.

Halep Makes a Brisk Start
Two-time champion Simona Halep, too, got off to a flying start, knocking out China’s Shuai Zhang in the first round on Thursday.
The Romanian dominated the first set, dropping just five points on her serve. She saved both the break points that she faced in the set and converted both that she held to go one-up.
Zhang started off the second well, going 0-2 up, but Halep hit back immediately. She broke three times in the set to take the contest 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 10 minutes.
With the win, Halep improved to 16-4 in 2022. The 30-year-old picked up her 23rd title by winning the Melbourne Summer Set 1 trophy. She also reached the last four in Dubai and Indian Wells.
Halep won back to back Madrid titles in 2016 and 2017 and was a finalist in 2014 and 2019. Last year, she was eliminated in the Round of 16.
The Romanian has a 9-9 record on clay court finals and that includes a French Open title in 2018 and two previous runner-up finishes. Overall she has a 73% win record on clay and will be a tough player to beat in the tournament.
Badosa v Halep Prediction and Tip
It’s a showdown that should have taken place at a later stage in the tournament, and definitely not in the second round. Expect this to go the distance, with Halep edging past the Spaniard.
