Petra Martic v Karolina Muchova Head to Head

Petra Martic is hoping to deliver another deep run in Rome – hopefully by reaching the final this time. Last season, she reached the semifinal – her first such feat in a WTA 1000 event – after dismissing the likes of Shelby Rogers, Kristina Mladenovic, and Jessica Pegula en route.

Since then, the Croatian hasn’t reached the elite four in any other WTA event on the tour. The closest she came to was in the Indian Wells Open this season when she reached the quarterfinal by overcoming Tamara Zidansek, Emma Raducanu, and Liudmila Samsonova.

Martic last played in Madrid where she made it to the second round as a qualifier by surpassing Dalma Galfi, LuciaBronzetti, and Samsonova once again. However, she fell to Amanda Anisimova in three sets.

Here in Rome, she started in the qualifying rounds as usual and dismissed Ellen Perez and Susan Bandecchi in straight sets.

Currently ranked World No. 58, the 31-year-old hasn’t been the most consistent player on the circuit and the precedent is certainly set for Muchova to follow.

Muchova, Recovering from Injury

Just last year, Karolina Muchova was ranking in the top 20 but a hip injury she incurred in early 2022 has knocked her out of action.

The 25-year-old Czech has slipped down to the #67th position and has competed in her last event under the protected ranking rule. So far this season, Muchova has featured only in the Miami Open (third-round withdrawal over Naomi Osaka) and Madrid Open (second-round loss to Belinda Bencic).

As for her form, Muchova has shown a great deal of promise in the past and has got a good record against the top 10 players. She was also a quarterfinalist in Madrid 2021 and is not too hesitant when it comes to playing on clay.

Martic v Muchova Prediction and Tip

This is a good match that can swing either way. Martic is the odds-on favourite given her superior pedigree but her inconsistency and a tendency to fall to lower-ranked players give Muchova a solid chance.

Speaking of Muchova, a lot will depend on how fit she is; she looked good in Madrid and will hope to do better this time around. All in all, we have a good match ahead of us.
