Karolina Pliskova v Jil Teichmann Head to Head

Teichman leads Pliskova 1-0 in their series, winning their solitary meeting before this at the 2021 Cincinnati Open. The Swiss southpaw defeated the powerful Czech in the semis to reach her first WTA 1000 final of her career.

Pliskova Begins Quest For Fourth Rome Final

Karolina Pliskova can call Rome a second home. She is one of the most decorated players in the draw at this week’s Italian Open. She has reached the finals in each of her last three trips to the Eternal City, and took the prize in 2019 when she beat Johanna Konta in the final.

But she doesn’t have fond memories of her last two finals. She finished runner-up to Simona Halep in 2020, with a left thigh injury preventing her from completing the match. And last year, she suffered the most humiliating defeat of her career when she lost 6-0 6-0 to Iga Swiatek.

In as much as Rome gets the best out of Pliskova, we have also seen the other side of the Czech that perhaps is unheard of. In 2018 a contentious line call saw all hell break loose as Pliskova fired at the umpire’s chair at the end of her three-set defeat to Maria Sakkari.

This year, Pliskova enters the Rome field with very little expectation. After a delayed start to her 2022 season due to injury, she is yet to hit the ground running. With a 2-5 record for the season, the Czech faces an insurmountable task of replicating her previous best achievement in this tournament.

Teichmann Too Good For Paolini

You never get an easy time facing a local favorite in Rome. Such was Teichmann’s task in her first round against the diminutive Jasmine Paolini.

But the Swiss southpaw did not put a foot wrong even with the whole crowd against her. She took the ball away from Paolini’s strike zone, nullifying the Italian’s biggest threat –  her ferocious forehand. And in doing so, Teichmann was able to dictate the baseline rallies, putting Paolini’s feet at work.

The 24-year-old, who reached the semifinals of the Madrid Open last week, did not show any sort of complacency. She fired five aces and won 80% first-serve points. The Swiss also broke her opponent four times during the one-hour and 20-minute contest.

With the win, Teichman has now advanced into the second round of the Italian Open for the first time in three tries and will be looking to pick up her 7th win on the dirt this season.

Pliskova v Teichmann Prediction and Tip

Teichmann is looking to build on a very commendable run at the Madrid Open this past week. With all the momentum in the world, the Swiss southpaw has the edge over the 2019 champion.
