Giron Brushes Aside Danish Teenager

Giron had already shown that he might be a force to be reckoned with on grass by reaching the quarter-final in Mallorca last week, and he proved far too good for the Danish teenager Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, making his Wimbledon debut, on Tuesday.

Rune had already saved break points by the time he dropped his serve midway through the first set, and Giron went on to take it with a minimum of fuss.

It was a similar story in the second set, one break of serve proving enough for the American.

When Rune was broken early in the third set it seemed the game was up for the world number 29. He did have break point opportunities after that but could convert none of them.

To his credit, the teenager did save four match points on his own serve. But he was only delaying the inevitable and Giron served out next game.

Molcan Overcomes First Set Deficit Against Spaniard

Molcan is appearing in the main draw at Wimbledon for the first time, and has made it through to the second round after a come from behind victory over Pedro Martinez of Spain, ranked one place above him currently.

In what was principally a battle of clay court players, the first set was littered with break point opportunities, but none were actually taken until Molcan became the first man to drop his serve. The Spaniard went on to claim the set.

When Molcan went a break down in the second set he must have feared the worst. But he immediately broke back, and then saved three break points.

Serving to stay in the set, Martinez chose the wrong moment to be broken again.

The third set remained on serve until the ninth game when Martinez had two more break opportunities. He was quickly made to regret failing to take either of them when he was broken again next game, and Molcan claimed the set.

Two further breaks early in the fourth set put the Slovak in total control. By the end Martinez was well beaten.

Giron v Molcan Prediction and Tip

Molcan may be the higher ranked player, but he is one of those man happier on clay. The American has never been beyond the second round of Wimbledon before, but this seems a golden opportunity to improve on that record.
