Rafael Nadal v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 competition which was played earlier this year and Nadal had registered a 6-2, 7-5 win over his opponent in that one.

Nadal Staves off Cerundolo Challenge

It wasn’t the kind of start that Nadal would have hoped for or liked at Wimbledon 2022. The 22-time Grand Slam winner made heavy weather of registering a win against Francisco Cerundolo in his first round match, with his Argentine opponent giving him a proper workover.

In the end, Nadal managed to prevent a five-setter, winning 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a match lasting three hours and 36 minutes.

The Spaniard got off to a quick start when he broke Cerundolo in the fourth game but then again, in the fifth was broken back. Nadal then saved three break-points at 4-4, before handing his Argentine opponent a break in the 10th game to clinch the first set.

The second set was more straightforward with Nadal getting a decisive break in the sixth game to go 2-0 up, but then lost the third set despite being a break up. Things looked to be unravelling for Nadal when he fell 3-1 behind in the fourth but the Spaniard rattled off four successive games to complete the victory.

Nadal will hope to get a lot better than this when he takes on Berankis.

Berankis Stuns Sam

Sam Querrey was a whopping 1/5 favourite going into his first round match against Ricardas Berankis. By the end of the encounter it seemed like it was Berankis who had those odds on his win.

Because the Lithuanian player cruised to a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 win over Querrey, following on from a three-match losing streak over the last one month or so.

Berankis was on court for an hour and 41 minutes, and withstood 20 Querrey aces before breaking him once in each of the three sets. In turn, he defended well and the only two break-points he himself faced, Berankis managed to save it.

Against Nadal, Berankis would he can better his 62% first serve percentage and get some early winners in – unlike the mere 11 he got against Querrey.

It might still not be enough.

Nadal v Berankis Prediction and Tip

Nadal might have struggled in the first round but it doesn’t matter too much given his second round opponent hasn’t had the best time on grass anyway. Expecting a straight-set win for Nadal.
