Halys Struggles on Grass

Quentin Halys has not played much on the tour this year but the 25-year-old has done well at the Challenger level.

The Frenchman reached as many as five Challenger finals this year, winning the titles in Pau and Lille and finishing runner-up in Forli, Turin and Bordeaux. The latter was the only clay court tournament while the other were all hard court events.

He hasn’t been as effective on grass though, failing to qualify in Stuttgart and Mallorca and falling in the first round in Queen’s after qualifying for the main draw. At Wimbledon, Halys won his first round match against Benoit Paire in four sets to reach the second round of a major for just the third time.

But he was once again stopped in the Round of 64, falling to Nikoloz Basilashvili.

This is the first season when he is playing on grass courts. Can he impress on his Newport debut.

Popyrin Is 6-4 on Grass Across Levels This Year

Alexei Popyrin is 3-11 on the tour, but has shown good form at the grass court Challenger events.

The 22-year-old Aussie was a semifinalist in back-to-back tournaments in Nottingham and Ilkley. Popyrin won his third Challenger title of his career, by beating Quentin Halys in Bordeaux in May.

The World No. 83, who lost a five-setter against Hugo Gaston in the opening round in Wimbledon, will be making his debut in Newport.

Popyrin brings a 6-4 grass record (from all levels) to the tournament with hopes of improving that further.

Halys v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

Popyrin had beaten Halys in their only meeting earlier this year and will hold the edge on grass as well. Expect the Aussie to advance.
