Karen Khachanov v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head
Khachanov has won both their previous meetings at the Australian Open in 2019 and at the Olympics last year.

Karen Khachanov avoided an early exit as he came back from a set down to beat Dominik Koepfer in the second round.
The seventh seed, who had received a first-round bye, came back from a break down twice in the first set, but lost the tiebreak to the German left-hander.
A set down, the Russian went up a break early in the second but saw the German wipe off the advantage in the eighth game. Khachanov broke again in the 11th games before taking the set.
He went up a break early in the third as well, and looked in control for the rest of the match to win 6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 46 minutes.
The win was the World No. 24’s 25th win of the season. A finalist in Adelaide-1 at the start of the season, Khachanov has made the quarterfinals seven times this year, which also includes two semifinal appearances in Dubai and Belgrade.
In all of his last three tournaments, in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Halle and Hamburg, Khachanov has exited in the last eight stage. Can he make it four quarterfinals in a row with a win on Thursday?

Nishioka Knocks Out de Minaur
Having struggled on the tour for most parts of this season, World No. 96 Yoshihito Nishioka finally seems to be back in form.
The Japanese left-hander, who stunned Jenson Brooksby in the opening round, pulled off another upset in the second round, defeating 11th seed Alex de Minaur in a three-set contest.
Nishioka didn’t hold a single break point in the first set, while he was broken once by de Mianuar, who took a one-set-to-love lead. The Japanese player built a 1-3 lead in the second though, but the Aussie fought back with a double break, racing to a 3-5 lead. Nishioka didn’t allow de Minaur to run away with the match and stayed in the contest by breaking again and forcing the tiebreak.
He then saved a match point at 5-6 in the tiebreak before going on to seal the set and take it to the third set.
Nishioka dominated the third set to claim the contest 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in two hours and 45 minutes.
The World No. 98 had beaten Brooksby 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. Thanks to the two wins Nishioka improved his season record to 7-10, while his Washington record now stands at 5-4. This is the second time that Nishioka is in the Round of 16 in Washington. He is looking to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in the tournament and for a second time this season, after making it that far in Acapulco in February.

With Nishioka taking down two very good players, Khachanov won’t take him lightly. But the Russian is the superior player and has a 2-0 head-to-head record. He should eventually edge past the Japanese in the contest.
