Wang Xiyu v Liudmilla Samsonova Head to Head
They have never played each other in the main draw of tournaments at the highest level but in 2020 did face off in the qualifiers of that year’s Australian Open.
Samsonova won a tight, three-setter to make it through to the main draw of that competition.

Xiyu Punishes Azarenka
Bookmakers had pegged Xiyu at 11/4 for her to defeat Victoria Azarenka but she was clearly unbothered about those odds. The Chinese player took down Azarenka in double-quick time to reach the semifinal of another event this season having done that on the WTA 125 and ITF circuit.
Azarenka looked like she had no answers to agility of Xiyu as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over the world number 20 in a mere hour and 16 minutes.
Seven double-faults off the Azarenka racquet helped but with Xiyu winning more than 70% of her points on the first serve, there was no coming back for the Belarusian.

Samsonova Sends Raducanu Crashing
Many were expecting Emma Raducanu to reach a rare semifinal following her US Open win last season but it was Samsonova who ended the Briton’s dreams in the last eight stage.
Samsonova reached the semifinal with a 7-6 (6), 6-1 win over Raducanu, in a match that lasted an hour and 48 minutes.
In a topsy-turvy first set, Samsonova was up a break on three separate occasions but that wasn’t enough for her to finish off the set. It went into a tie-breaker where she then had to save a couple of set-points at 4-6, before converting the first one she got.
Raducanu fell away in the second set as Samsonova broke the Brit twice to complete win.
In the semifinal, Samsonova knows she has a good chance against a first-timer but Xiyu is also in good form and that will necessitate the Russian to be at her best, especially given her form through the rest of the season has been anything but excellent.
