Alex de Minaur v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

They played three times before and the de Minaur is leading 2-1. Most recent one came at the 2022 ATP Cup and de Minaur won that one in three sets.

de Minaur’s Early Exit in Washington

Alex de Minaur won the trophy in Atlanta but the Australian stumbled in the second round of Washington against Nishioka. It was a surprising defeat as the Aussie won the opening set and it seemed like he would extend his excellent run but he lost.

Nishioka is now in the semi-final of the event so the Japanese player is certainly doing something right this week in Washington and de Minaur was a bit fatigued. He did have a couple of days rest and the travel was relatively short but it was a very long week for him in Atlanta.

A couple of gruelling matches but he should be a strong contender on the hard courts of North American because he’s played well earlier this year on them as well. He’s 12-6 on the surface overall and he loves playing on it.

He only played once in Canada and lost so he’s not that familiar with the event. I still like his chances though because he showed a fairly high level on the surface leading up to this event despite the early exit in Washinton.

Shapovalov Hoping For 2017 Repeat

Denis Shapovalov achieved his best result in Canada in 2017 as an 18-year-old when he reached the semifinal losing to eventual champion Alexander Zverev. He never replicated that result again but he is hopeful that he can repeat the 2017 result once more.

This year’s Masters will be played in Montreal just like that one and he should draw some confidence from that. He’s familiar with the courts and conditions and he certainly hopes to do much better than last year when he crashed out early.

Preparations have not been that good as he played in Washington and lost to native Wolf who is playing well at the moment but he’s a player Shapovalov should have beaten. It’s been a generally weak year for him with a 17-16 record. He is 12-8 on hard courts but most of those wins came really early in the season.

It won’t be an easy matchup against de Minaur who has beaten him twice in the past couple of years.

de Minaur v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

There are very few players that are more entertaining to watch than Shapovalov when he’s playing well but it’s been months since he’s done that. de Minaur played well recently and as much as I would love to see Shapovalo playing well again, I can’t back him here.

This is a perfect opportunity for de Minaur to extend the Canadian’s poor season. All their matches went to three sets and I think this one will too.

Tip: de Minaur to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
