Stan Wawrinka v Corentin Moutet Head to Head

Corentin Moutet holds a surprising 2-0 lead in the head-to-head, beating Wawrinka in 2020 on the hard courts of Doha and more recently in the first round of the French Open in four sets.

Wawrinka Winless Since Queen’s

The curtain is surely coming down for Stan Wawrinka. The decline of a great athlete can be a painful watch and certainly when injuries play a part in it.

For Wawrinka’s case, it is a mix of injury and losing that extra yard of pace that naturally comes with aging. The Swiss one-hander is now 37, playing with surgically repaired knees.

It almost beggars belief that he remains positive and confident of competing at the top level despite his inconsistent form in 2022. Wawrinka has won three matches since making his comeback at the end of March.

He won twice in Rome, and once at Queens in that epic three-setter against Tiafoe. But incredibly, he has not beaten any opponent since leaving London, losing his last five matches on the trot. Can he turn his fortunes around when he returns to New York for the first time since 2019?

Moutet Gets Lucky Loser Spot

Despite his routine straight-set loss to Yibing Wu in the final round of qualifying, Corentin Moutet has been handed a lifeline by getting a lucky loser spot in the main draw of this year’s US Open.

Moutet hasn’t lost a first-round match at the Grand Slam level since last year’s Wimbledon, which points out that he can challenge higher-ranked players in top-tier tournaments.

In fact, the French lefty shocked Wawrinka at this year’s French Open when he came from a set down to win. Oddly enough, Moutet used that result as a springboard to a dominant week at the Lyon Challenger where he romped to win his first Challenger title since 2019.

After a year to forget in 2021, Moutet is inching ever closer to returning to the world’s Top 100. And a third career win over Wawrinka on Monday could aid his cause.

Wawrinka v Moutet Prediction and Tip

If you watched Wawrinka’s matches this season, you can’t fault the effort. But at 37, he tends to move unsteadily. Moutet is not in great form, but you suspect he will have that extra pace in his legs to retrieve most of the balls in a baseline duel.
