Shelton Makes His Grand Slam Debut

Shelton enjoyed a highly successful college career, and, earlier in 2022, was named National Player of the Year.

Transitioning to the main tour, he has made two Challenger finals in the past two months, finishing runner-up in Rome (The American version) and Chicago.

He made his main tour debut in Atlanta and recorded his first ATP win there, before losing to John Isner.

However, it was what he did in Cincinnati that really saw him make a name for himself. Granted a wildcard, he overcame Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, the world number 63, in three sets in the first round and then shocked the world number seven, Casper Ruud of Norway, with a comprehensive straight sets victory.

Cameron Norrie, though, proved to be much too strong for him in his subsequent match.

He is making his Grand Slam debut as a wildcard.

Burgos Qualifies for Third Successive Grand Slam

Borgos has been playing on the junior tours for several years, but he has come to prominence in the last 18 months, reaching six Challenger finals and winning two of them, most recently in Italy in April.

That same month he won his first senior title on home soil in Estoril in the doubles, where he was partnered by compatriot Francisco Cabal.

He also reached the second round of the singles there, before losing to the American Frances Tiafoe in three sets.

This will be his debut in the main draw in New York, but he has booked his place after overcoming Alex Rybakov of the USA, compatriot Govind Nanda, and then the Italian Francesco Maestrelli in the qualifying competition.

That makes it the third successive Grand Slam this year for which he has qualified. Having lost in the first round at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the next stage he has to overcome is winning a match at this level.

Shelton v Burgos Prediction and Tip

This match features a wildcard and a qualifier, neither of whom has won a Grand Slam match before, so the victory will be the first for somebody at this level. Shelton will, though, have the advantage of playing in home conditions and, with the New York crowd behind him, will believe that the omens favour him.
