Brandon Nakashima v Denis Kudla Head to Head

These players have played twice before this and both have won one match apiece.

Kudla had won their match at the Washington Open in 2021 while Nakashima avenged that loss by winning at the 2022 Delray Beach Open.

Nakashima Fights Past Svajda

Zachary Svajda is ranked outside the top 400 on the ATP Rankings but he showed he is capable of a lot more as he made Nakashima work doubly hard for his opening round win.

Having gone into the match as a 1/8 favourite, Nakashima needed nearly two hours on court to carve out a 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over his fellow American.

Nakashima, who was 11-12 in hard court competitions coming into San Diego Open, took an early 2-0 lead in the opening set only to drop serve in the very next game. Fortunately for him, he got himself a couple of break-points at 5-5 and converted the first before serving it out.

In the second set again, it was Nakashima who drew first blood with the break but lost the very next game to make it 3-3. Nakashima then had a chance to serve it out at 6-5 but was forced into a tie-breaker as he dropped his serve again before wrapping up the encounter.

He now faces another American, albeit an out-of-form one for a place in the quarterfinal.

Kudla Cruises Past Verdasco

Kudla’s form at the highest level has been so wretched that despite facing the struggling Fernando Verdasco and going into the encounter as a 1/2 favourite to win, there was little belief he would clinch it with ease.

In fact, when Kudla won his opener 6-3, 6-3, he might have probably surprised himself, having coming into the match on the back of five successive defeats.

The match lasted a mere hour and 19 minutes, and while Kudla did drop his serve once apiece in both sets, that came after he had already broken Verdasco twice.

Coming up against Nakashima, Kudla will know he has his work cut out but the ease with which he managed the Verdasco could be a ray of hope for him.

Nakashima v Kudla Prediction and Tip

Nakashima is a heavy favourite given his opponent’s form but one needs to tread cautiously here given his own struggles in recent times and the fact that Kudla might have found himself some confidence. Nakashima might still win but not before Kudla has given him a working over in at least one of the sets.

Tip: Nakashima to win AND Over 21.5 games: 13/8 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
