Hiroki Moriya v Yuta Shimizu Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between Moriya, who is 31 years old, and Shimizu, eight years his younger.

Lucky Loser Moriya

Moriya has won three ATP Challenger events, although the last of those victories was more than four years ago. He did, however, reach a final in Rennes, France last November, and has won on the ITF circuit this year.

Despite this, one has to go back to January 2015 to find when he peaked his world singles ranking at number 143.

The world number 253 owes his participation in the main draw to a slice of good fortune.

Having beaten compatriot Yuki Mochizuki in straight sets in the first round of qualifying, he lost to another Japanese player, Sho Shimabukuro, in three sets in the second.

However, he then earned a reprieve as a Lucky Loser.

Surprise Qualifier Shimizu

Although Shimizu reached the final of the Boys’ Doubles at the US Open as a junior in 2017, his senor credentials are even less distinguished than Moriya’s.

His highest singles ranking is 313th in the world achieved more than two years ago, and it has slipped considerably since then. However, unlike his opponent, he has earned his first round place on merit, having beaten two much higher ranked men in qualifying.

First he beat Nicolas Jarry of Chile, the world number 105 in straight sets, and then did the same to the Australian Max Purcell.

Moriya v Shimizu Prediction and Tip

One of these players is guaranteed to make the second round of their home event, something that neither could have predicted before the start of qualifying.

Moriya’s greater experience and higher ranking makes him the slight favourite, but Shimizu has already pulled off two surprises in qualifying, and may be in the mood for a third.
