Elena Ruse has not won a match in a while and she wants to change that in Monastir.
The draw certainly gave her a golden opportunity as she will face a player she defeated once a few years ago. She’s also the far better player overall so her win should be rather comfortable.
Her last win was almost a month ago in Portoroz and since then Ruse played only one event and it was last week in Tallinn. She played a terrible match and lost in the qualifiers.
Ruse is a fascinating player who is able to play really strong tennis.
She likes to attack and never stray away from that style but it can also get her beaten because she can’t adjust that easily. It either works or not. It’s not been working that often this year as she only has 16 wins but 19 losses however she has been good indoors so far in her career.

Rodina’s Third Match of the Year
Evgeniya Rodina has not played many matches this year as this will be only her 3rd match of the year. The former top 100 player used her protected ranking to enter this event as she hopes to rebuild her career after a long time off.
It will be hard against a player like Ruse but she will believe she can do it, especially on clay.
While hard courts are her best surface she can certainly play well on clay but it remains to be seen in what shape the former top 100 player is. She played at the US Open which was her first event back and she defeated Martina Trevisan in two sets.
Then she played against Tomljanovic and nearly defeated her in a very good 3-set match. This one is certainly one she can win but Ruse is certainly capable of beating her as well.
It will be interesting to see whether Rodina can bring the US Open level on clay.
Ruse v Rodina Prediction and Tip
Ruse is heavily favoured but I don’t think it will be that simple. It’s mostly due to the way she plays tennis and that leaves her vulnerable to an upset. Pick the over-games market to be safe though.
