David Goffin score some impressive wins in his career but him beating Alcaraz in the first round of Astana was something nobody saw coming. He’s been playing okay tennis lately but it wasn’t as good as he played earlier this year.
After having two very good months, Goffin fell off, quite a bit, which makes this win that much more impressive.
I don’t think he expected it to be as easy as it was but Alcaraz simply did not play well. Goffin, to his credit, did play really well and it was a perfect storm of things that went in his favour. He now sits 32-25 on the year with his indoor record only at 3-4.
Still, he had plenty of success against Mannarino in the past so him winning this one would not be a surprise. Especially after he defeated Alcaraz and I believe he will be buzzing with confidence after that win.

Mannarino Playing Well in Astana
Adrian Mannarino playing well in Astana is nothing unusual as he did that plenty of times before. He is a former finalist of this event but since then it grew quite a bit in prestige. It’s now an ATP 500 event with the reigning number one attending and losing.
The Frenchman faced Stan Wawrinka in the opening round and he did quite well. Despite losing the opening set, Mannarino stuck with it and turned the match around. It was a good win for him as Wawrinka had played well in previous weeks.
It also snapped a two-match losing streak against players that in all honestly, he should have beaten.
This one is a bit different as he didn’t have much success against Goffin in the past although he did beat him twice. He bit him earlier this year in Montpellier 6-4 6-2 so he’ll probably feel himself in this one as well.

The smart play would probably be an over because I do think we’ll see a competitive one. I will however back Goffin to win because he looked great against Alcaraz. Why wouldn’t he repeat that against an okay Mannarino?
