Garcia Looking to Return to Form

Since June, a resurgent Caroline Garcia has been one of the most dangerous players on the tour. The 29-year-old Frenchwoman has won three titles during this phase and also reached her maiden Grand Slam semifinal at the US Open. But she is yet to win a match since winning her last eight match in Flushing Meadows.

Garcia lost to Ons Jabeur in the U.S. Open semifinal and then suffered back-to-back losses in Tokyo and San Diego. While it was Shuai Zhang, who defeated her in the second round in  Tokyo, Danielle Collins knocked her out in the first round in San Diego.

But given her current form it is only a matter of time when she returns to winning ways. Garcia has a 40-18 record this season, but ever since the start of the Bad Homberg Open in June, she is 31-7. That run included two WTA 250 titles in Bad Homburg and Warsaw and a WTA 100o triumph in Cincinnati.

Thanks to those performances, Garcia, who started the year at no. 74, has moved into the top 10 once again.

The world no. 10 will be eager to return to form on Tuesday and start her campaign with a win.

Marino Ousts Li

Rebecca Marino picked up her third win in three days as the qualifier marched into the second round in Guadalajara.

Marino, who made it to the main draw with three-set wins over Sachia Vickery and Elvina Kalieva, defeated America’s Ann Li in the first round on Monday.

The World no. 80 didn’t face a single break point in the first set, but she had eight chances to break the American and she took two of them to seal the first set. The second set was more competitive. Li broke early and had an opportunity to close out the set at 3-5, but Marino fought back and forced the tiebreak. The Canadian built a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker and then eased to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) victory.

Marino’s recent form has been very good by her standards. She was a quarterfinalist in Washington, Granby and Chennai and also made a third round debut at the U.S. Open.

She also played two ITF finals this year, winning one of them. Overall she is 46-22 from all her matches and 13-13 on the tour.

Given her recent form she may ask a few tough questions of Garcia.

Garcia v Marino Prediction and Tip

Garcia will be determined to bounce back after her recent losses. Her game is of better quality and over the last five months she has been one of the best on the tour. The Frenchwoman should not have much trouble in advancing.
