A semifinalist in Astana and a semifinalist in Florence, Lorenzo Musetti is now a win away from a third consecutive final four spot in October.
The Italian, ranked no. 24th in the world, ousted Laslo Djere in the second round in Naples on Thursday. Seeded no. 4th in the tournament, he received a first round bye and so he was playing his first match of the tournament on Thursday.
The 20-year-old Italian, who won his maiden ATP title in Hamburg this year, needed an hour and 37 minutes to beat the Serb 7-5, 6-3. Musetti wasn’t broken in the match as he saved both the break points that he faced. He had four breaking chances in the match and he capitalised on half of them.
The Italian, who also won a Challenger in Forli this year, has more experience playing on clay in his young career. But he has started delivering results on a consistent basis on hard courts now.
A win on Friday will take him into his fourth tour-level semifinal on the season.

Galan Sees Off Borges
Daniel Elahi Galan marched into his third tour-level quarterfinal of the season on Thursday as he held off Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round.
After conceding an early break in the first set, the Colombian got the break back immediately, before going on to edge the set in the tiebreak. He carried the momentum into the second set, racing to a 5-2 lead after getting a break early in the set, but he Borges refused to go down without a fight. He got the break back to make it 5-4, but the World no. 72 broke for a second time to advance to the quarterfinals.
Galan, who was recently a quarterfinalist in San Diego, had won his opening round match against Bernabe Zapata Miralles, defeating the Spaniard 6-4, 6-4.
Among Galan’s other notable performances this year, he made it to the third round of the U.S. Open on his debut and also made his third round debut at the Wimbledon.
