Ruud Looking to Put Recent Disappointments Behind
Second seed Casper Ruud has had a magnificent 2022. The Norwegian not only strengthened his credentials as a top clay court player, but also showed that he his capable of delivering big results on hard courts on a regular basis.
The world no. 3 has featured in six finals this season, winning three clay court titles in Buenos Aires, Geneva and the Swiss Open and taking his career tally of clay court titles to eight. But apart from those three ATP 25o titles his best came in the big tournaments. He had only reached finals in ATP 250 tournaments before this season. But this year, he raised his level and reached three huge finals.
Two of those were Grand Slam finals at the French and the U.S. Opens and the third was his maiden ATP 1000 final in Miami.
Although he didn’t succeed in winning any of the three, his consistent deep runs helped him scale new heights in the world of tennis. The 23-yer-old, who had begun the season as the World no. 8 had peaked to a career high of no. 2 for three weeks but he has fallen back to no. 3 after going 1-2 in the two ATP tournaments following the U.S. Open.
He lost in the quarterfinal in Seoul and lost in the opening round in Tokyo. Can he put the two disappointing results behind and start well in Basel.

Wawrinka Would Look to Draw Inspiration from Metz
After producing a fantastic result in Metz, World no. 193 Stan Wawrinka lost in the opening round in Astana to Adrian Mannarino, thus the 37-year-old brings a 6-11 season record to Basel.
The 16-time tour-level champion has a 13-13 record in his home tournament and was a semifinalist in 2006 and 2011. Most recently he was the quarterfinalist in 2016 and 2019.
Wawrinka, who had left foot surgery last year, barely played last year and recorded wins in just three tournaments this year. The world no. 193 delivered his best result in Metz, where the Swiss came through the qualifiers and then defeated Daniil Medvedev en route the semifinals. It was his first final four appearance since Doha in 2020.
Wawrinka is chasing his first final since finishing runner-up in Antwerp in 2019. He has lost in the opening rounds nine times in his 12 tournaments this year. He is currently on a three-match losing streak, having lost in the semifinals in Metz and in the first rounds in Astana and Antwerp. Can he win an opening round match again as the season draws to a close?
Ruud v Wawrinka Prediction and Tip
Ruud has been one of the most consistent players on the tour and he has a 47-18 record this season. The previous two tournaments may not have gone the way he would have liked, but he will look to overcome the recent slump and return to his best in Basel.
